Music is essential to the modern shamanic journey. It is the inspiration, the guide, the calling. It holds our stories, our myths, our hearts and souls. It speaks to the spirit of our times. Many of my favorite shamans are rock stars. They probably don't even know they're shamans but they know how to get to ecstasy and back, and how to take others with them. They may not have a license, but they know how to drive.
Many shamans have been born and died in the beat of rock n' roll - charting their journeys, dancing their demons in concert stadiums all over the world. When we're lucky, they take us along with them.
Rock n' roll has become a universal form of music it moves boundaries, beyond politics, beyond religion, economics, culture, sociology, language, custom and ideology. Rock n' roll speaks to the soul of freedom it is today's shamanic call - back to the beat, the heartbeat, back to the body, back to the basics. Rock for the rain forests, for starving children and burned out farmers - rock for the homeless, rock for political prisoners. Rock it, roll it, change it.
Rock concerts are the modern tribal rituals where communal ecstasy is a real possibility - the moment when the crowd and music are one, in the beat. This is religious experience, holy communion. Our young people are starving for unity and this is their hope. How wonderful that it all takes place in a context where all we're being sold is T-shirts - not guilt, obligation, hierarchy, stricture, or dogma.
